Hardest Religious Trekking Practice

Triangular  Neurosis
Now I have been with an extremely rare disease for some time. It is as rare as to give me a strange confidence that never all through human history has there been a person who experienced my disease. The symptom is as follows. " Oh my God,over there are standing many houses with triangular shaped roofs!"
" Look, the shape of the
pointer on the Web is triangular!" " On this table
cloth are drawn many triangular shaped forms"
Every time I make this kind of unwanted discovery
, my mind gets upset. In this way my disease makes me abnormally aware of the existence of
any kind of triangular shaped forms whenever they come into my sight. Lately I started to feel it
a scare to even keep my eyes open because of fear
of disturbing objects jumping into my sight anytime. Day by day my mind is getting darker and darker and I feel as if my mind were driven into a dark corner.
Encounter a mind-shaking book
It was in such a state of my mind that I encountered a book. The book is about the extreme Buddhist trekking practice by an ascetic who walked the course of 48 km every day along the mountain path. It was a book written with sweat, blood and tear, confessing his inner battle in his mind. He said as if he were persuading himself, " However bad physical condition I, an ascetic, may fall in, I must walk even in torrential downpour. I experienced  many agonies such as high fever over
39 °C , diarrhea which attacked me every hour ,
an swollen leg due to a blow and so on. It was the time when I must kill myself that I discontinued
walking." As I read the book telling the record of
tremendous practice, a lonely battle  within himself , I gradually  started to feel ashamed of myself for being worried about my small present
problem and the feeling of shame was followed by
something like the gush of vitality , destructive in
a way, rising from within the depth of my mind beyond human logic and reasoning-power.
What  makes you stand up again?
High fever, severe headache which kept ringing in
his head and stomachache caused by medicine
taken for reliving unbearable pain in his leg.
Even in such a hopeless condition an ascetic is not
allowed to see a doctor because of the uncompromising rule. When he says, " I had no
other choice but walk 48km every day." the words
of unshakable determination brings a strained air
to our loosened mind. The name of the ascetic is
Shionuma Ryojun . He is a priest who challenged
three kinds of life-or-death Buddhist practice and
accomplished all of them.
When we are really driven into corner, tender words can't help us stand up thoroughly. Fighting
instinct which makes us roar in critical situation,
"Forget a well-behaved manner! Damn! Never will
I be defeated!" and ultimate self-dignity to believe " I am not
such a weak person." become the last driving force
to stand up at the very last moment. The book reminded me of it again. Now to begin with , I'd
like to write his first challenge of 100-day spiritual
trekking practice.
     100-Day Spiritual Trekking Practice

The spirit to blow off weakened mind
when our mind gets trapped in a situation with no
way out and stay long there, the weakened mind is
likely to start dominating our whole mind. When it happens, the words uttered from the mouth of an
ascetic gives us courage to blow off darkened mood hanging over deeply in our mind.
The ascetic walks muttering," I must keep walking
in any kinds of condition. When I can't , I only have to cut my stomach. Right, left, one step by
one." But when he says so, his voice doesn't sound
heavy but light , peaceful and transparent,  because perhaps he was ready to accept for anything to happen.
Only three days after the start of the practice, he
experienced a pain in his right knee・・・・ Soon
he experienced another pain in the other side of
his leg due to taking care of the injured knee・・・
Both of his legs became just like a stick unable to
bend (He was forced to walk the stairs down    backward )・・・・Then toothache started (Each footstep sent him an unbearable pain to the top of his head. Once he lost consciousness due to pain) Then he experienced stomachache due to overdose of
medicine he took to relieve pain in his teeth.
Even under such an extreme condition an ascetic keeps walking . The image of the ascetic fighting against his weakness slaps my cheek and shakes my mind with positive energy rising up from only God knows where.
Details of 100 days' practice
This Buddhist practice aims to keep walking only for the sake of walking in any kind of weather for
100 days, with two parts divided. For the first 50
days an ascetic is supposed to cover only one way
of 24km up to the summit of the mountain as high
as 1355m every day and to return the temple the
next day after staying in the Buddhist related accommodation at the summit . For the next 50 days he returns straight back to the temple , walking the distance of as much as 48 km. The first 50 days is considered to be a warming up period but walking up and down along the mountain path is not an easy job for even an experienced climber. Then let's follow an ascetic's daily life.
An ascetic 's daily life
1.  Get up at 11:25 pm
(Being dead tired, his brain gets abnormally
sensitive to sound, which wakes him up at
a  little sound. The average sleeping hours is 4 hours.
2.  Go to a nearby river      and carry out the       waterfall practice , reciting a sutra.
(The temperature of open air is around 4°C.
The cold water splashes from the body of an
ascetic. This waterfall practice is obligatory
even when he has a fever higher than 39°C.)
3.  Eat two small riceballs
4.  Put on the costume of an ascetic
5.  Make a start, holding a paper lantern
     at midnight
6.  On the way at 118 small shrines he stops and
     recites a sutra
7.   Eat two rice balls at 5:00am
8.   Arrive at the summit at 8:30am and eat
breakfast at the accommodation at the summit
9.  Return to the temple at 4:00 pm and do washing as usual
10. Eat supper
11. Write down what came to his mind on the day
12. Go to bed

This is a rough sketch of an ascetic daily life.  All
day long he is supposed to carry out the practice
with dignity and confidence for two reasons. One
reason is that he voluntarily started himself. The other reason is to get a permit for next more challenging practice, the one thousand days' trekking practice.
No gain should be expected
An ascetic encounters many different kinds of dangerous things such as vipers, bears, wild
boars and so on and sometimes must pass very
dangerous places ,which requires excessive attention and concentration . With all these difficulties to overcome , he should not expect anything concrete in return , which is the essence of this practice. But why?
A fundamental Existential question
A question over the true meaning of our life asked
with despair that worldly  pleasure can never satisfy our mind entirely overturns the foundation
of our way of thinking. You may have, for instance,
a certain goal to pursue in your life. You may be able to live a spiritually rich life until you reach the
goal. But I wonder if you can live through such a life relying on the goal? The world changes and you get old. With the passing of
time your goal which was once shinning loses its
color just like a toy you used to play with. It is not
your goal but you that change. Then is there anything that never loses its color and which you can rely on for your inner life all through your life?
This is a fundamental question of an ascetic.

A blissful joy experienced in despair

Rev. Shionuma recalls his hardest experience,"
Once up in the mountain I was driven to the verge
of desperation and felt that I was at the end of my life. After remaining in such a state , I suddenly felt a stream of flash of all my memories from my
birth coming to my brain. Then I experienced an
inexplicable loving feeling for myself, eating a small rice ball in heavy rain. The next moment I felt overwhelmed with indescribable blissful happiness rising up from within the depth of my inner being.
I may have stepped into the true world beyond our
reasoning-power." Perhaps what he experienced may be similar to a feeling of being embraced in the big arm of nature beyond time and space.
The state of Satori glanced with blood and sweat
A scholar may call the state he expericed " 空kuh"
" mindless" and so on. But when he talks about the inner
experience himself , unlike the scholar, how clearly
and freshly his simple words can reach our mind.
You may say that the state of his mind he experienced has something to do with the world
grasped without contacting between consciousness and objects , where peaceful and eternal time keeps running. I should think that it is there that we can find an unchangeable true life.
I'd like to get a step closer to the state .
In my next blog I will write about the center of his practices , the one thousand days' trekking practice.

The English version of the following blog will follow soon.

A lonely poet and zen priest "Ryohkan"

Ryohkan's peculiar melody
Everyone of us has his own melody given at the time of birth. But not so many people live through
with their own melody all their life and make the
ultimate form of its realization. Let's see the statue
of Ryohkan shown above. There we can see everything  of the realization of his own melody, that is say, tranquility, selfless mind , self-abandonment, purity, transparency, modesty, detachment, inward smile, innocence; all these are
the inner outcome of Ryohkan when trudging toward his simple dwelling in woods at dusk in the
shower of fallen leaves holding the Buddhist's
walking stick.
Towards the end of his life an old man asked Ryohkan when begging for food, "Why do yo live in woods? " Ryohkan replied " Why do you live in town? " This dialogue shows the symbol of the essence of his own melody and tells the reason why he abandoned his good social position and wealth, and started the life of a lonely and poor zen priest.

Why he abandoned the worldly life?
Then Let's think of the reason why he abandoned
the worldly life from the spiritual viewpoint. There
seem to be two reasons in my opinion. One is his
sharp and sensitive perception as a poet to respond the voice of young girls , dressed up in
fine clothes , echoing under clear sky. The other
is his disposition of pessimism created by the lack
of worldly desires. Such a type of person usually
is drawn toward spirituality rather than material
pursuit and often find himself out of place in society. In extreme case he is labelled a failure.
Because of this , the degree of his loneliness is so
great that his craving after absolute spiritual foundation can be abnormally immense. The very
question, " We all die . Despite the fact how come
people can laugh like that? " is adhered at the back of his dry mind just like the transparent morning light penetrating everything . Making a
step to live on the mentally firm ground or escaping into desires to run away the agonies of
life? The choice is only these two. But for such a
person as Ryohkan the path to mentally healthy
citizen life is out of question.
 Ryohkan's disposition & Zen
Death or living? The problem is critical. And he chose the path to a priest putting the more importance on spiritual peace than material pursuit. In a word the only choice left for Ryohkan
was the hermit-like life in woods. Ryohkan became
a priest at the age of 18. The temple he chose was
that of zen sect , which tells Ryhoka himself  and a
special meaning for the development of his own melody. Compared with other Buddhism sects , zen puts the importance on seeing inside the mind
thoroughly. That is why zen is considered to be suitable for individualists in comparison with other Buddhism sects whose aim is mainly to save people. Ryhokan was an inward lone-wold rather than type of people showing the outstanding leadership . The downward shoulder and his eys
looking downward seen in the statue of Ryhokan
tells above disposition. The practice he experienced over ten years must have been more than severe and intense. But Ryohkan' s type is,
generally speaking, gifted with spiritual storengh
as individualist although he is not strong in human
organization. Most likely  Ryohkan got to know a
true happiness and a feeling of fullness  and felt a firm spiritual ground being built through hard practice. The experience must have supported his
spirituality in the latter of his life. He experienced
above awakening through his body. There we can
see the development of his own melody.
What is Ryohkan's zen?
Ryhokan was far from a typical type of zen priest
with sharp penetrating eyes, overwhelming appearance to overpower with its presence there,
insulting toned words and a roar of laughter.
He was, after all, a poor looking idle priest walking
around in the light of his hometown dragging his
weakening body in the dancing fallen leaves. In the eyes of children he must have looked a strange
priest. To remain an existence who abandoned everything of himself with acceptance of being called "Dumb" as penniless priest walking all over
Japan for pilgrimage may have been an imposition
on himself. Needless to say, even in leading such a
life what was the center of his life was zen. In such
way of life we can see the uniqueness of Ryohkan's
zen different from that of any other zen priests.
One may find typical zen in a great priest like Dohgen with outstanding gifted spiritual strength
who grasped absolute truth in inspiration beyound
human comprehension after severe zen practice but the zen of Ryohkan who played the Japanese
harp or wrote poems on lonely nights melting himself into light of his hometown is also one of
zen forms. For average people the zen of Ryhokan
with human weakness may comfort us more than
any other zens when we are lonely.

Great Japanese Zen Masters

Praying at fireplace after farming
Our family were all out in the rice field engaged
in hard farming work all day along today as usual. In the evening surrounding the fireplace in the center of shabby soot-covered room , we used to take a simple meal praying with gratitude for being able to work in health today. In those days
nature was overwhelming over human life. But time has been drastically changed and what people
expect from religions has been also changed.

Where is a drop of warmth of heart?
Set free from worries about food, clothes and houses , many people of today shed blood of loneliness amid desert-like big cities because of
no place for their soul to rely on. They wander around in search of a drop of warm love. Their thirst is imminent. But people of today who were raised in distrust and doubt are too timid to open their heart and trust others. They can't as much as follow their heart honestly. Especially Japanese who were raised with religious allergy find it impossible to accept such words as " Believe me and you will be saved. "

The soil for zen to be required
Here comes the soil for zen to be required. The root of zen's way of thinking is totally different from that of the ordinary way of thinking. we usually think that birth comes first to be followed by death. But in zen existential true self , unshakable and everlasting peaceful dwelling , lies in no mind over life and death. It is the world of Reality that can't be grasped consciously as an object. As soon as we throw the arrow of consciousness at the object, our true self vanishes away. Looking up at the vast sky above us , we see a mass of cloud passing gracefully uninterruptedly even for one moment.Looking down at the ground, we see wild flowers bloom in spring and wither away in autumn unnoticed. The ultimate goal of zen is to become the cloud or the flowers themselves . We leave ourselves to the eternal stream of change uninterruptedly even for one moment and keep running on the stream
unconsciously.

In such an attitude towards life can be found zen's
way of peaceful life based on their truth.

The way to peaceful mind left in past
Suffering starts only when we become conscious
of ourselves. But our self-consciousness dwells in
the root of our existence. Many way-seeker of past
and present fought against a life of struggle in the conflict between the agony caused by self-consciousness and the way to no mind in which agony and suffering ceases. In the process of peace searching some may sometimes  fall down breeding and stand up with their death-ready will to keep walking. Among them are there great figures who conquered the struggle of life and left
the way to peace for our generation at the expence
of their life. This time I'd like to introduce some
Japanese zen masters of such kind in the hope of
having a glance at the ultimate stage of unshakable happiness left by the zen masters over
time and space by tracing back the footprint of their path on which they walked with sweat, tears
blood.

How's the zen of "Ryohkan" living in woods and playing with kids
To begin with, I'd like to approach the final spiritual stage of Ryohkan who lived a free and self-indulgent life alone in the woods , going to nearby towns to beg for food, playing with kids on  his way back home on fine days and reading books or writing poems or playing the Japanese flute on rainy days.

His wring I mentioned below shows the essence of
his attitude towards life

When we encounter troubles , we encounter them.
when the time comes to die, we die. This is the
only way to avoid all the troubles.

UTOPIA
There some people are engaged in cultivating the
farm land and others are engaged in a kind of work which doesn't break peace,
in order to support our  own living. If necessary, we willingly
offer our help to others in financial trouble. We don't save money but work to gain only what is
necessary. We are materially poor but it is the result of our own choice. Despite the fact, we are rich in our mind because we know  that only through simple living and self-sufficient life can be
gained the true richness of life. Among us are there no people who make weapons nor people who are engaged in war-related profession. Even
peace-oriented profession , we avoid it if it may put us into injustice. Among us there is no
superiority and inferiority relationship but we are all equal and free in every respect and think it natural to give voluntary service each other. One
day a week we all take a day-off, on which we spend time , taking a walk in nature , reading books with our mind facing to ourselves in silence.
In such a way we confirm the meaning and gratitude of our life deeply. Sometimes we talk about the wisdom written in the teaching of world
religions passed down to us from the ancient times
and share the gratitude of our fleeting life in this
vast cosmic space. We live altogether closely just like brothers but never keep strangers away . Each
one of us has his own profession and work eagerly
and positively free from the feeling of being tired of work. We live according to the law of nature , starting to work with sunrise and finishing our work with sunset . We think work in itself much
more rewarding than leisure and good for both
physical and mental health. we also think that the
work has a great merit of continuing it all through
our life. We often share dinner one another . If any of us fall sick, we can receive free medical  treatment
with the money saved by all of us and take care of
the sick with considerate mind each other. In such a place I'd like to live.

Zen Poem

Flowers bloom silently
                 and wither away silently
They never go back to their branches
      However they entrust everything
in this world at this very moment
                         at this very place
It is a voice of a flower and
                      the truth of the flower
There shine happiness of
                         never-dying life
